Abstract

1,001,924. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. NATIONAL CASH REGISTER CO. Aug. 4, 1964 [Sept. 9, 1963], No. 30548/64À Heading B5K. Marginal edge portions of a plurality of continuoue sheets or webs 20, 21 of fibrous material, the mating surfaces of which webs are coated with an adhesive resistance coating 34, are bonded together by continuously advancing each web 20, 21, forming a plurality of coating- rupturing serrations 32 along the edge portion of each web 20, 21, applying an adhesive 40 along the serrated edge portion of at least one of the webs 20, 21, superimposing the serrated edge portions, and applying pressure to the edge portions and the interposed adhesive. In an apparatus, Fig. 1, for forming a business form consisting of a web 20 the upper surface of which has a clay coating and a web 21 the lower surface of which has a coating of pressure-rupturable ink-containing capsules, the webs 20, 21 are fed from rolls 22 and each passes a wheel 26 which punches pin-feed apertures 25, Fig. 2, therein. Each web 20, 21 then passes a wheel 28 having a plurality of cutting heads 29 which perforate the web at 30 to provide a line of weakening to facilitate separation of the webs when required. An embossing wheel 31 ruptures the web to form minute serrations 32, Fig. 2. The wheel 31 is adjusted so that the teeth thereof barely break through the lower edge of the web 20, 21. Thermoplastic adhesive 40 from a roll 36 is fed to a heated applicator unit 37 and applied over the serrations 32 of the web 21 which is then joined to the serrated edge of the web 20 by a pressure pad 39. After bonding, the webs 20, 21 are formed with transverse weakening lines similar to the lines 30 to divide the webs into form lengths.
