Abstract

A composition comprises a thermoplastic synthetic resin or cellulose derivative and a plasticizer comprising an ester of an organic acid and at least one of: 3-methylhexanol-1, 3-ethylhexanol-1, 3-methylheptanol-1, and 3-ethylheptanol-1. The resin may be a polymer or copolymer of vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, vinylidene chloride, methyl methacrylate or acrylonitrile, or polyvinyl butyral, and the cellulose derivative may be cellulose nitrate or acetate, nitrocellulose or ethyl cellulose. The organic acid may be formic, stearic, lauric, oleic, hexoic, benzoic, phthalic, adipic, sebacic, succinic, tartaric, glycollic, citric, tricarballylic, glutaric, pimelic, suberic or azelaic acid, phthalic acid being preferred. An example describes compositions comprising polyvinyl chloride, phthalate esters of the above alcohols, white lead and calcium stearate.
