Abstract

Natural resins are plasticized by nonyl esters of polybasic organic acids such as phthalic, adipic, sebacic, succinic, tartaric, glycollic, citric, aconitic, and tricarballylic acids. Fillers, stabilizers, colouring matter and chlorinated waxes may be added. In example 14 a lacquer comprises nitrocellulose, dammar, a nonyl phthalate, butyl and ethyl acetates and alcohols, and toluol. Specifications 500,298, [Group IV], 521,093, [Group V], 573,840, 573,841, 579,550, [all in Group IV], 591,611 and 600,270, [Group V], are referred to.ALSO:Organic thermoplastic substances are plasticised with one or more nonyl esters of polybasic organic acids. Nonyl alcohols specified are 3,5,5-trimethyl-1-hexyl and 2,3,3-trimethyl hexyl alcohols. Phthalic, adipic, sebacic, succinic, tartaric, glycollic, citric, aconitic and tricarballylic acids are specified. The thermoplastic substance may be cellulose nitrate, acetate, acetobutyrate or acetopropionate, ethyl and benzyl cellulose, polymers and copolymers of vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, vinylidene chloride, methyl methacrylate and acrylonitrile, polyvinyl butyral, rubbery copolymers of butadiene with styrene or acrylonitrile, and halogenated polythene. Mixed esters may be used, the other alcohol having 4-8 carbon atoms, e.g. 2-ethyl hexanol or butyl alcohol. Chlorinated paraffin waxes, fillers such as titanium dioxide or china clay, stabilisers such as white lead, calcium stearate and colouring matter such as carbon black may be added and the compositions used in lacquers, cable coverings, leathercloth, hollow articles, extrusion and moulding. Ethyl palmitate is added to polyvinyl chloride compositions in the examples. In example 8 nitrocellulose with a nonyl phthalate, butyl alcohol, butyl acetate and toluene is cast into a film, and example 14 describes a nitrocellulose lacquer with dewaxed damar, a nonyl phthalate, butyl and ethyl acetates and alcohols and toluol. Specifications 500,298, 521,093, [Group V], 573,840, 573,841, 579,550, 591,611 and 600,270, [Group V], are referred to.ALSO:Synthetic rubbers such as Neoprene and rubbery copolymers of butadiene with styrene or acrylonitrile are plasticized by nonyl esters of polybasic organic acids such as phthalic, adipic, sebacic, suecinic, tartaric, glycollic, citric, aconitic, and tricarballylic acids. Fillers, stabilisers, colouring matter and chlorinated waxes may be added.
