Abstract

Natural resins are plasticized by 3,5,5-trimethyl-1-hexyl esters of monobasic organic acids such as methacrylic, formic, acetic, propionic, butyric, hexoic, stearic, oleic, ricinoleic, lauric, levulinic, abietic, benzoic and chlorbenzoic acids. Fillers, stabilizers, colouring matter and chlorinated paraffin waxes may be added. Such compositions may be used as lacquers or for making shaped articles. In the examples, polyvinyl chloride is mixed with ethyl palmitate, white lead, titanium dioxide and 3,5,5-trimethyl-1-hexyl p-chlorbenzoate, and a nitrocellulose with the formate of the same nonyl alcohol, butyl acetate, toluene and butyl alcohol to form a film. The formate may be replaced by the acetate, methacrylate or stearate.
