Abstract

A cellulose derivative or resin composition comprises as plasticizer one or more cyclohexyl or monoalkylcyclohexyl esters of isophthalic or terephthalic acid. The resin is preferably thermoplastic and may be a vinyl polymer, e.g. polyvinyl acetate, chloride, formal, acetal or butyral; a vinyl copolymer, e.g. vinyl acetate/chloride polystyrene or polyisobutylene; the cellulose derivative may be a cellulose ester, e.g. nitrocellulose or cellulose acetate butyrate, or a cellulose ether, e.g. methyl or ethyl cellulose. The thermoplastic substance may be plasticized with one of the esters mentioned and dissolved in a relatively volatile organic solvent to give a coating composition suitable for application to flexible sheet material which may be used as wrapping material, e.g. regenerated cellulose foil, to impart heat-sealing properties to the sheet material. The solvent may be ethyl or butyl acetate or toluene or xylene and other additives such as conventional plasticizers, e.g. phthalate alkyl esters, alkyd resins, paraffin wax and slip agents, e.g. calcium carbonate or zinc stearate, may be incorporated. The examples describe nitrocellulose compositions plasticized with di-cyclohexyl and di-p-methylcyclohexyl isophthalate and di-p-methylcyclohexyl terephthalate. The esters may be prepared by reacting the acid or a lower alkyl ester with the cyclohexanol e.g. in toluene in the presence of p-toluene sulphonic acids. The examples describe the preparation of di-cyclohexyl-and di-p-methylcyclohexyl isophthalate.
