Abstract
A solid thermoplastic composition comprises a uniform blend of a cellulose ester of an organic aliphatic acid and at least one olefin polymer. Preferably, the olefin polymer is present in a proportion of 0.1 to 20% by weight of the polymer, especially 0.1 to 10%. Specified cellulose esters include cellulose acetate, cellulose propionate and cellulose acetatebutyrate, and the olefin polymer is preferably a polymer of a mono-olefin having 2, 3 or 4 carbon atoms, those specified including polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutylene, polyisobutylene, ethylenepropylene copolymers and ethylene propylene-non-conjugated diene interpolymers. Copolymers comprising predominantly olefins and other monomers copolymerizable therewith, and blends of such polymers may be used. The composition may also contain a plasticizer, especially a dialkyl phthalate, e.g. dimethyl phthalate or diethyl phthalate, or triphenyl phosphate, methyl phthalyl ethyl glycolate, di-n-butyl sebacate, ethyl phthalyl ethyl glycolate, butyl phthalyl butyl glycolate, dibutyl phthalate, dioctyl adipate, dioctyl phthalate, butyl benzyl phthalate, and triacetin. Where cellulose acetate is used, a mixture of dimethyl phthalate and diethyl phthalate is preferred. Solvents may also be present, e.g. acetone, methyl acetate, methylene chloride and a mixture of methylene chloride with a lower aliphatic alcohol. Conventional additives, e.g. fillers, stabilizers, colouring agents and lubricants may also be present.
