Formbare thermoplastische NEschung

E= X 100

Moldable thermoplastic embankment
This invention relates to a thermoplastic composition containing a cellulose ester of an aliphatic acid, from which molded articles having excellent physical and mechanical properties can be produced. In particular, the invention relates to a thermoplastic composition which contains a cellulose ester of an aliphatic acid and at least one homo- or copolymer of olefins. If desired, a plasticizer, solvent, filler, dye, lubricant, etc. can also be present.
Hitherto, it has been known to use a composition containing a cellulose ester of an aliphatic acid and a plasticizer for the same in the manufacture of a molded article from a ceflulose ester of an aliphatic acid.
However, until now, the physical and mechanical properties of molded articles made from such a composition have been limited, and it has not been possible until now to use a molded article made from such a composition which is used under undesirably severe working conditions, e.g. B. a molded article with inlaid steel, properties that are satisfactory to give.
The inventors now have in their investigations with thermoplastic molding compositions of cellulose esters of aliphatic acids, which they employed with the intention of creating a composition from which molded articles with improved properties such as tensile strength, elongation, impact strength, resistance to embrittlement at low temperatures , Hardness, dimensional stability in heat, water absorption properties, resistance to cracking, without loss of the good gloss and good feel inherent in the cellulose esters of aliphatic acids, found that a cellulose ester of an aliphatic acid is uniform with a homo- or copolymer of olefins can be mixed to form a seemingly compatible mixture,
from which molded articles can be produced with physical and mechanical properties improved in a desired manner without loss of advantageous properties of the cellulose ester.
The inventors have also found that it is expedient to add the said polymer in an amount of about 0.1 to 20 parts by weight, preferably 0.1 to 10 parts by weight, per 100 parts by weight of the cellulose ester of the aliphatic acid, and that it depends of the type of molded article to be produced recommends also incorporating a plasticizer into the mixture.
Mixing a named polymer with a thermoplastic molding compound of a cellulose ester of an aliphatic acid was considered practically useless because of the lack of compatibility between the two polymers, and it was expected that molded articles with uniform properties could not be produced from the mixture. Surprisingly, however, an O'lefiw-type polymer can be conveniently and uniformly blended with a cellulose ester of an aliphatic acid to form what appears to be a compatible blend and from which molded articles having improved physical and mechanical properties while maintaining the favorable properties of the cellulose ester can be.
It is therefore a purpose of the invention to provide a thermoplastic, moldable mass with which the physical and mechanical properties of a molded article produced therefrom are significantly improved without the advantageous properties of a cellulose ester of an aliphatic acid being forfeited.
Cellulose acetate, cellulose propionate and cellulose acetate butyrate may be mentioned as cellulose ester of an aliphatic acid, which is contained as a first component in the composition according to the invention. In particular, cellulose acetate with an acetic acid content of 51-62, 5% (2, 14-3 acetate groups per glucose unit), cellulose propionate with a propionic acid content of 56, 7-63, 2% (2, 2-2, 7 propionate groups per glucose unit) and Cellulose acetate butyrate with an acetic acid content of 18-41.5% and a butyric acid content of 22-46% are considered.
The named homo- or copolymers of olefins, which form a second component of the composition according to the invention, consist of a copolymer which is composed predominantly of olefin and the remainder of other manomers which can be copolymerized with olefins, or of an interpolymer, predominantly of olefin, and a Mixture of these polymers. Examples of such homo- or copolymers of olefins are: an olefin homopolymer such as polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutylene and polyisobutylene, ethylene-propylene copolymers and interpolymers of ethylene, propylene and non-conjugated diene.
The composition according to the invention contains at least one component of the first-mentioned type and at least one component of the second-mentioned type. In many cases it is advisable to add a plasticizer as the third component. A plasticizer is not required for the production of yarn and threads, but for the production of other shaped structures it is useful if the mixture contains a plasticizer.
As the plasticizer for the cellulose ester of an aliphatic acid, a single plasticizer or a mixture of plasticizers can be used, e.g.
Dimethyl phthalate, diethyl phthalate,
Triphenyl phosphate, methyl phthalyl ethyl glycolate,
Di-n-butyl sebacate, ethyl phthalyl ethyl glycolate, butyl phthalyl butyl glycolate, dibutyl phthalate,
Dioctyl adipate, dioctyl phthalate, butyl benzyl phthalate and triacetin.
If cellulose acetate is used as the first component, the use of a combination of dimethyl phthalate and diethyl phthalate is advantageous.
For the production of shaped structures such as films, the composition can also contain a solvent, e.g. B. acetone, methyl acetate, methylene chloride or a mixture of methylene chloride and lower aliphatic alcohol.
Of course, in addition to plasticizers and solvents, the cellulose starch can also contain other customary additives such as fillers, stabilizers, dyes and lubricants.
Preferably, the olefin-type polymer mentioned as the second component is used in an amount of about 0.1 to 20 parts by weight, preferably 0.1 to 10 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of the cellulose ester of an aliphatic acid mentioned as the first component. An amount of 1 to 5 parts by weight is preferred for molding an article provided with an insert which is to have particularly high tensile strength and elongation. The amount of a plasticizer depends on the kind and amount of the cellulose ester of an aliphatic acid used, but an amount of about 5 to 60 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of the cellulose ester is usually enough to achieve the purpose.
The proportions of the olefin-type polymer, plasticizer, solvent, filler, stabilizer, synthetic agent and lubricant can be varied as required without departing from the purpose of the invention.
In the preparation of the mixture according to the invention, these components are mixed, mixing conditions should be maintained under which sufficient mechanical stress is exercised.
Such mixing methods are, for example, he wänt; Kneading, screw pressing, Bumbury mixing, mastication and rapid stirring. These methods can also be combined in a suitable manner. In any case, the mixture is subjected to sufficient mechanical protection in order to mix the components evenly until the mixture shows external compatibility. If z. For example, if a screw press is used, the components will appear compatible while moving in a cylinder and no additional special mixing is required.
If liquid plasticizers and other additives and also a solvent are mixed in, sufficient strength can also be exerted by kneading. The mixing operation can be carried out at room temperature if a solvent is present, but mixing with heating is usually preferable.
The mixture according to the invention can be continuously formed into a molded article, such as. B. when using a screw press for mixing, dooh it is usually brought into tablet form after sufficiently evenly blending and offered in this form for molding.
Various embodiments of the invention will now be explained by means of examples, the properties of molded articles produced from mixtures according to the invention being compared with those of molded articles produced from previously known masses of cellulose esters of aliphatic acids. However, the invention is of course not limited by these examples. In the examples, the parts mean parts by weight.

tensile strenght
A dumbbell-shaped test piece with a length of 120 mm, a maximum width of 25 mm, a minimum width of 10 mm and a thickness of 5 mm was placed in a room at 20 ¯ 1 C and a relative humidity of 65 2% for 48 hours ditched.
Then, the test piece was placed in a tensile tester and subjected to tensile stress at a tensile speed of about 10 mm / min.
The maximum stress until the test piece was cracked was measured. The tensile strength was calculated according to the following formula by repeating the same operation six times and taking the average value.
L T = L S T = tensile strength (kg / cm2), L = maximum load until the test piece was broken (kg), S = cross-sectional area of the test piece (cm2).
2. stretching
On that part of the dumbbell-shaped test stick mentioned, where the width was 10 mm, a distance of 40 mm was marked by two points. The elongation was calculated from the distance between the two marked points when the test piece ruptured under the tensile load and the original distance between the two marked points using the following formula: 1e-1
E = X 100
1 E elongation (%), 1e = distance between the two marked points when the test piece tears (mm), 1 = original distance between the two marked points (mm).
3. Elongation to the yield point
On that part of the dumbbell-shaped test piece mentioned, where the width was 10 mm, a distance of 40 mm was marked by two points. The elongation was calculated using the following formula from the distance between the two marked points when the profile reached a yield point as a result of the tensile load, and the original distance between the two marked points.
Ey = elongation to the yield point, ly = distance between the two marked points when the yield point was reached (mm), 1 = original distance between the two marked points on the test piece (mm).
4. Impact strength
An incision 2 mm deep and 1 mm in radius was made in the center of a surface of a rectangular parallelepiped measuring 15 X 15 X 90 mm. The distance between two standing points was 60 mm. According to the Charpy impact test, in which a hammer strikes in the middle of a surface of the test piece which is opposite the surface provided with an incision, the percussion hammer was lifted from the path of the test piece to a certain angle and allowed to strike against the said center. The impact energy consumed per unit of the cross-sectional area of the incision was determined as the impact strength value using a conversion table.
The same operation was repeated six times and the average was taken.
5. Hardness Rockwell hardness, ASTM method D 785-51 6. Dimensional stability under heat (heat dilection temperature)
Method ASTM D 648-56 7. Water absorption
A test disc with a diameter of 50.8 mm and a thickness of 3.18 mm was predried for 48 hours at 50 ° C., then immersed in a water container kept at a constant temperature of 20 ° C. for 24 hours. The water was then wiped off and the weight (W) of the test disk at this point was measured in grams. The disk was then tracked again for 48 hours at 50 ° C. and then allowed to cool in a desiccator. The weight W2 (in g) of the disk was then determined.
The amount of water absorbed by immersion in water was expressed in% of the pane weight W1.
A = WlW2 X 100 WU
A = water absorption (%)
As can be seen from Table 1, elongation, tensile strength, impact strength, water absorption, hardness and also other properties of an article formed from the mixture according to the invention are better. The inflow of heterogeneous mixing was not noticed in the molded article of Example 1 at all.
Example 2

The degree of exudation was determined as follows. A test piece, such as was used to determine the water absorption, was predried at 50 ° C. for 48 hours. Then the weight of the test piece (as the initial weight Wo) in g was determined, whereupon the test piece was immersed in a water container with a constant temperature of 20 ¯ 1 C for 24 hours.
The water was then wiped off and the test piece was again dried for 48 hours at 50 ° C. and then allowed to cool in a desiccator. Now the weight (W2) in g was again determined and the extent of exudation was calculated using the following formula:
B = Wo-W2 x zoo Wo
B = extent of exudation (%).

Example 17
100 parts of crushed cellulose acetate and 1 part of a polypropylene (the same as in Example 3), which was crushed into particles of a coarse finer than 200 meshes, were evenly mixed. The powder mixture, containing 8% moisture, was placed in a hopper and kept under nitrogen gas.
It was then pressed into a screw-type melter in which the air was replaced with N2 gas, expelling the air in the powder. The powder then came into a melting zone and was then ejected as a thread through an outlet opening and wound up (melt spinning).
The properties of the thread were compared with those of a dry-spun acetate thread without a polypropylene content (comparison mixture no. 14). The results are given in Table 14.

The dry tensile strength and elongation were determined on a 50 cm long thread with a pendulum tension / elongation tester of the Schopper type at a clip drop speed of 100 mm / min. The wet tensile strength and elongation were measured in a water container after the sample had been immersed in ion exchange water at 20 ° C. containing a penetrant for more than 2 minutes.
1. Tensile strength
Two threads 450 m in length were made and their deniers determined. The tensile strength was expressed as grams / denier, with the tensile force, W, measured in grams as indicated above. The same operation was repeated five times, and the average value was obtained as a measured value.
T = W / D
T = tensile strength of the thread (g / d),
W = strength of the test thread,
D = denier.
2. stretching
It was determined from the absolute elongation up to the occurrence of the break in the tensile / elongation test: E = # 1/1 X 100.
E = elongation (%), A 1 = absolute elongation during brunch (cm),
1 = original length of the test target (cm).
Example 18
An acetate film made from a standard mixture of 100 parts of cellulose acetate, 2 parts of thin ethyl phthalate and 8 parts of triphenyl phosphate (comparative mixture No. 15) and another acetate film, which is obtained by mechanically mixing comparative mixture No. 15 with 1.5 parts of polypropylene (the same as in Example 3 ) and molding the mixture thus obtained into a sheet by extrusion had the properties shown in Table 15.

Example 8 (comparison mixture No. 15) Tensile strength (kg / cm2) 563 398 Elongation (%) 56 38 Flexural strength (kg / cm2) 637 465 Water absorption 24 hours (5'o ') 3, 9 4, 8 Measurement methods for the films: 1 Tensile strength and elongation
A dumbbell-shaped test piece of the same size as a molded plastic test piece and a film thickness of 0.65 mm was left to stand for 48 hours at 20 1 C in air with a relative humidity set to 65 2% and then placed in a tensile tester.
A tensile force was exerted at a tensile speed of 10 mm / min-n. The maximum force until the test piece tears and the thickness between two specific points at more than 3 points were measured. The tensile strength was determined after determining the cross-sectional area. In the same way as in the case of a molded plastic test piece, the elongation at break was calculated.
2. Flexural strength
Determined according to the ASTM-D790-59 T method.
3. Water absorption
A square 30 X 30 mm test piece with a thickness of 0.65 mm was dried for 24 hours at 50 ° C. and allowed to cool in a desiccator.
It was then immersed in a water container at a constant temperature of 20 1 C for 24 hours, the water was then wiped off and the weight of the test piece was determined in g (W1). The piece was then tracked again for 24 hours at 50 ° C. and then allowed to cool in a desiccator, whereupon the weight (W2) in g of the test piece was measured. The water absorbed was calculated in% using the formula A-Wl-W2 X 100 wi.
A = water absorption (S).
As can be seen from the examples described, the mixtures according to the invention were very easy to prepare and mold. In addition, the molded articles formed therefrom had excellent physical and mechanical properties. In addition, the gloss and the handle of the moldings were excellent.
