Abstract

Organic thermoplastic materials are plasticized by a mixture of neutral esters derived from at least one polybasic acid and the mixture of at least one straight chain primary alcohol containing from 6 to 10 carbon atoms per molecule and at least one 2-methyl substituted primary alcohol containing from 6 to 10 carbon atoms per molecule having the general formula <FORM:0707235/IV (a)/1> where R is a straight chain alkyl group. The term "neutral ester" means an ester obtained by the esterification of all the carboxyl groups of a polybasic acid. The polybasic acid may be aconitic, adipic, citric, phthalic, succinic, tartaric, tricarballylic or orthophosphoric acid. Organic thermoplastic materials specified are cellulose nitrate, acetate, acetobutyrate and acetopropionate, ethyl and benzyl cellulose, polymers and interpolymers of vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, vinylidene chloride, methyl methacrylate and acrylonitrile, acetals, particularly butyrals, of hydrolyzed polyvinylesters, halogenated solid polymers of ethylene, Neoprene and copolymers of butadiene with styrene or acrylonitrile. Other materials such as chlorinated paraffin waxes, stabilizers, fillers and colouring materials may be incorporated. The mixture of alcohols from which the esters are derived may be prepared by the process of Specifications 684,958, 692,089, 701,434 or 704,942, [all in Group IV (b)], and may be esterified by the process of Specifications 667,109, 684,334 or 687,142, [all in Group IV(b)]. The plasticized material may be used for the production of sheathings for cables and for coating textile sheets.
