Abstract
1277496 Conjugate fibres NIPPON SELFOC KK 10 Sept 1969 [19 Sept 1968] 44747/69 Heading B5B [Also in Divisions C3 and G2] A method of producing a light-conducting synthetic resin body comprises preparing a mixture of two transparent polymers of different refractive indices and of different solubilities in a given solvent, forming the mixture into a solid elongated body, and treating the body with the solvent to extract the polymers in different proportions from the original proportions and so produce a body in which the relative proportions of the two materials varies progressively along a transverse radial line. Polymers used are homo- or copolymers of styrene, nuclear and or side chain-substituted styrenes such as α- methyl styrene and vinyl toluenes, lower alkyl methacrylates, vinyl chloride and vinyl esters. Stabilizers, plasticizers, lubricants and fillers may be used. In preparing the original body, heat plasticized polymers may be rolled or kneaded, powders may be dry blended whilst solutions of polymers may be mixed directly and the solvents evaporated off. In moulding the composite body, extrusion, injection, compression and transfer techniques may be used; fibres may be spun.
