Abstract

Saturated hydrocarbons are alkylated with unsaturated hydrocarbons in the presence of an inorganic acid catalyst to form higher boiling hydrocarbon products by contacting the reactants in an emulsified body comprising the materials maintained within a confined reaction zone, continuously withdrawing a portion of the emulsified materials from the reaction zone, rapidly separating the withdrawn emulsion by means of centrifugal force into a predominantly hydrocarbon stream and a predominantly catalyst stream, continuously recycling the separated catalyst stream to the reaction zone and recovering the product from at least a portion of the separated hydrocarbon stream. In a typical embodiment 4500 barrels of alkylate product are obtained when 3700 barrels of isobutane and 3200 barrels of butylene are treated with sulphuric acid in a 37 per cent emulsion.
