Abstract

1,193,219. Alkylating isoparaffins. TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP. 12 Dec., 1968, No. 59267/68. Heading C5E. In a process for alkylating an isoparaffin with an olefin in the presence of sulphuric acid catalyst, wherein used acid containing alkylation contaminant is reacted with an olefin to form an absorption product containing dialkyl sulphate which is subsequently separated therefrom and charged to the alkylation zone, an improvement comprises acid treating the absorption' product (to remove polymeric oil) prior to separation of the dialkyl sulphate. The acid treatment suitably uses used sulphuric acid. The dialkyl sulphate separation may be by settling or by extraction with isobutane, and the residual spent acid phase may be further treated with isobutane to recover remaining dialkyl sulphate. The acid treatment and/or the subsequent separation by settling may be carried out in the presence of isobutane. As specifically described, the absorption olefin is propylene, the isoparaffin to be alkylated is isobutane, and the alkylating agent is a mixture of butenes.
