Abstract
A process for the alkylation of isobutane comprises the steps of (1) contacting used sulphuric acid containing water and oil contaminants with propylene to form a product containing dipropyl sulphate; (2) contacting said product with a paraffinic hydrocarbon (e.g. isobutane) to form a raffinate and an extract comprising dipropyl sulphate and paraffinic hydrocarbon; (3) passing said extract into an alkylation zone in which a major proportion of said dipropyl sulphate is used to alkylate isobutane in the liquid phase in the presence of sulphuric acid alkylation catalyst, free sulphuric acid being liberated; (4) passing at least part of said catalyst containing unreacted propyl sulphates to a separate alkylation zone in which butylene and substantially all of said unreacted propyl sulphates are used to alkylate isobutane; (5) withdrawing at least part of the reaction mixture from stage (4); and (6) separating the withdrawn mixture into hydrocarbon and catalyst phases. If the paraffinic hydrocarbon used in step (2) is a normal paraffin, all or part of it is desirably flashed from the extract before passing the extract to step (3). The process economises in H2SO4 since used acid is converted back to 100% acid via dipropyl sulphate.
