Abstract

A process for alkylating isobutane comprises the steps of (1) contacting used sulphuric acid containing water and oil contaminants with propylene to form a reaction mixture containing dipropyl sulphate, water and oil contaminants; (2) contacting said reaction mixture with an isobutane rich condensate to form an extract comprising dipropyl sulphate and isobutane, and a raffinate comprising at least part of the water and oil contaminants; (3) contacting said extract with sulphuric acid alkylation catalyst under alkylation conditions in an alkylation zone which is cooled by the evaporation of at least part of the reaction mixture contained therein; (4) separating the acid and hydrocarbon phases; (5) forming from the hydrocarbon phase an isobutane rich vapour and remaining hydrocarbon liquid comprising unvaporized isobutane and alkylate product; (6) condensing said isobutane rich vapour to form an isobutane rich condensate for use in step (2); and (7) separating alkylate product from said remaining hydrocarbon liquid. An olefin feed-stock may be fed to the alkylation zone, i.e. to step (3). The process economises in H2SO4 since used acid is returned to the alkylation zone in the form of dipropyl sulphate and released in the zone as 100% H2SO4.
