Abstract

Ethylene is alkylated with tertiary hydrocarbons in presence of an alkylating catalyst under alkylating conditions and in presence of a higher molecular weight olefin, preferably butylene, the catalyst being sulphuric acid of at least 90 per cent strength, and the ratio of ethylene to higher molecular weight olefin being at least 1 : 1 and not substantially greater than 25 : 1. Examples are given in which ethylene is alkylated with isobutane in presence of butylenes. Apparatus is described for the treatment of a feed gas comprising a mixture of hydrocarbons from refining operations and containing 1 to 6 carbon atoms. The products are anti-knock hydrocarbons within the gasoline boiling range.
