558,487. Alkylation of hydrocarbons. STANDARD OIL DEVELOPMENT CO. June 30, 1941, No. 8191. Convention date, July 16, 1940. Addition to 546,406. [Class 2 (ii)] Motor fuels boiling within the gasoline range and having an improved octane number are obtained by alkylating at least one isoparaffin with a normally gaseous olefine mixture of ethylene and another mono-olefin in the presence of a substantially saturated aqueous solution of boron trifluoride, the molecular ratio of ethylene to other mono-olefins being between about 3:1 and about 1:2, and preferably between about 2:1 and 0.75:1. Examples are given of the alkylation of isobutane with a mixture of ethylene and propylene. Isopentane may be treated similarly, and propylene may be replaced by butylenes or isobutylene.
