559,207. Hydrocarbons. UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO. June 11, 1942, No. 7995. Convention date, June 25, 1941. Drawings to Specification. [Class 2 (iii)] Substantially saturated alkyl derivatives of paraffinic hydrocarbons are prepared by alkylating an isoparaffinic hydrocarbon by an olefinic hydrocarbon, or compound producing an olefinic hydrocarbon during the reaction, e.g. an alkyl halide, in presence of a solution comprising essentially a soluble metal halide of the Friedel-Crafts type, e.g. aluminium halide, dissolved in a nitroparaffin, the isoparaffin being used in molecular excess. A small amount of hydrogen chloride and hydrogen may be present. The olefine is diluted with the isoparaffin and introduced at a number of points through the reaction zone. Examples give the preparation of heptanes and octanes from isobutane and propene or normal butene, nitromethane being used as solvent for aluminium chloride. Nitroethane or nitropropane may also be used. Ethylene, butenes, higher normally liquid olefines, diolefines, polyolefines may also be used.
