559,067. Alkylation process. ARNOLD, J. C. (Standard Oil Development Co.). July 6, 1942, No. 9327. [Class 2 (iii)] Branched chain paraffins boiling within the gasoline range are prepared by reaction of at least one paraffin containing at least one tertiary carbon atom in the molecule with another paraffin of higher molecular. weight and (or) one or more olefins in presence of a catalyst made by mixing boron fluoride, water and hydrogen fluoride. The catalyst may be made by saturating an aqueous solution of hydrogen fluoride with boron fluoride at room temperature. The temperature is preferably 50-120‹ and increased pressure may be used. The undesired by-products of the reaction are recycled to the alkylation zone. Examples are given of the alkylation of isopentane with diisobutylene, isopentane with isooctane, isopentane with butylenes, and isopentane with butylenes.
