Abstract

<PICT:0792227/III/1> In a colloid mill in which material is fed to a narrow annular gap between a rotor and stator, the path for the material is divided into a number of abrasive milling zones spaced apart in the path of the material by vibration milling zones, the abrasive zones being formed by pairs of abrasive members mounted on the rotor and stator and the vibration zones being formed by toothed surfaces on the rotor co-operating with toothed surfaces in the stator to mill the material by subjecting it to high-frequency vibrations. As shown, abrasive grinding members 28 in slots in a stator 22 co-operate with similar grinding members in slots in a rotor 32 and the lands 26 between the slots are formed with radial or skewed teeth 30 to provide vibration milling zones. The co-operating surfaces of the grinding members 28 may be bevelled upwardly and outwardly. The stator is cooled by a liquid medium. The milling stages may be preceded by a vibration milling stage comprising toothed stator rings 41, 42, 43 and co-operating toothed rotor rings 48, 50, 52. The rings in this stage may be cylindrical. The spacing of the teeth round the rotor and stator is progressively reduced in successive vibration milling zones. The stator is adjustable relatively to the rotor by means of a hand-operated worm gear 72 which engages teeth on the outside of a ring 70 connected to the stator. The material entering the mill may be initially broken up by means of a rotary cutter 54. The mill can be used inter alia for making emulsions, dispersions and suspensions, and for homogenizing and pulverizing.
