Abstract

792,192. Adding powdered material to molten metals. LEDLOY, Ltd. Sept. 5, 1955 [June 3, 1954], No. 8399/54. Class 82(1) [Also in Group XXX] Solid materials such as lead, lead alloys or lead compounds, are added in subdivided form to a stream of molten metal by propelling the material from a storage container along a feeding duct which is connected to one part of the container and has a discharge opening in proximity to the liquid stream, the propulsion taking place under pressure of a gas supplied to the container at a position spaced from the end of the duct connected thereto. The duct has a discharge passage with a bore less than, the bore of the duct at the point of connection with the container, the bore of the discharge passage being sufficiently small, having regard to the size of the particles to be discharged, to retain the material against gravitational discharge when the gas pressure is cut off. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 1 material is supplied as required from hopper 22 to container 10, valve 23 is then closed and gas pressure is applied from the duct 13 forcing the material into and through duct 18. The discharge end of the duct has a tapering portion 21 and a constricted orifice 20. For use with lead shot of particle diameter 0.01-0.05 inch the tube 18 may have a bore of 1 inch and the constriction 20 a bore of 3/16 to 1/4 inch. The constricted portion may extend from the outlet over more than half of the length of the duct. Fig. 2 shows such a modification in which the feed duct 27 has a restricted diameter, e.g. “ inch, in relation to the bore 25 adjacent the point of connection of the duct with the container. The duct is conneted to the container through an orifice 20 a bore of 3/16 to 104 inchfl The constricfications a valve 14 is inserted between the container and the duct to prevent discharge of material when the apparatus is not in use. Specifications 519,572 and 520,227 are referred to.
