Abstract
A sugar refining adsorbent is made by forming into shapes a plastic mixture of steamed bone meal, clay, and an inert liquid, e.g., water, drying, and firing the shapes in the substantial absence of air to harden them at a temperature below that at which the clay vitrifies. The plastic mixture preferably contains 44 to 48 parts by weight of water per 100 parts of solids comprising 60 to 80 parts steamed bone meal, 15 to 20 parts clay, and 0 to 20 parts carbonizable organic material, e.g., starch, sugar, or molasses.
