Abstract

792,086. Closing containers. METAL BOX CO., Ltd. Sept. 14, 1956 [Nov. 11, 1955], No. 32333/55. Classes 94(1), 125(2) and 125(3). A metal container 1, formed with a neck 3 and an inwardlyextending rim 5, is closed and sealed by a soft-metal foil diaphragm 7 which is stretched across its mouth and secured by a thermoplastic adhesive to the rim and the exterior of the neck. The adhesive may be applied to the rim and neck or to the underside of the diaphragm. If the container is circular, as shown, the rim is formed by an inturned curl, but if the container is rectangular in cross-section, see Fig. 2 (not shown), the rim is formed by a horizontal flange. The closure may be completed by a lid 4 in frictional engagement with the neck, and a cardboard disc, see Fig. 4 (not shown), may be located between the undersurface of the lid and the diaphragm. A device for applying and sealing the diaphragm comprises a vertically-reciprocable tool 10, Fig. 3, carrying a resilient ring 18, e.g. of silicone rubber, which is adapted to mould the diaphragm to contour of the rim and neck and to be heated to activate the adhesive. The ring 18 is clamped to the undersurface of a steel plate 14 which is separated from the body of the tool by an insulating plate 15 and heated by a thermostatically-controlled, ring-type element 17. The temperature of the ring 18 is indicated by a thermometer 21.
