Abstract

791,378. Stapling fibres. ALGEMENE 'KUNSTZIJDE UNIE N. V. July 3, 1956 [July 27, 1955], No. 20600/56. Class 120(3) In apparatus for stapling filimentary tow, mechanism for forming and retaining the tow in a zig-zag configuration and cutting it between the bending points thereof comprises two discs each having circumferentially mounted equally spaced pins which project axially and in the same direction, notches being provided between the pins of one of the discs for allowing the passage of the pins of the other disc in the area of overlap and for the transmission of movement of one disc to the other, and two rollers each having an elastic peripheral tyre and being mounted coaxially with one of the discs within the pins thereof, the tyre of each roller being elastically compressed at the point of engagement of the discs by one or more pins of the disc other than the one with which it is mounted, and the path of the cutting means extends between the two rows of pins in the area of overlap. The apparatus shown comprises two interdigitating series of pins 10 and 11, receiving and tensioning the tow 27 therebetween and directing it into a zig-zag formation, carried on discs 13 and 17 the latter transmitting its drive to the former by engagement of notches 21 with the pins 10. The tow is held on both sides of the cutting zone against pins 10 and 11 by rubber tyres 24 and 26 carried on rollers 23 and 25 and is cut in the zone of the overlap of the discs 13 and 17 by a circular knife 12 the bearings for the shaft 28 of which are carried on a frame 32 which is adjustably and slidably supported on a fixed frame 33, and the cut ends are removed as by means of an air jet. The tow 27 is held away from the discs 13 and 17 in the cutting zone by a fork 43 comprising two bevelled tines 43a, 43b affixed to an anchorage 44 which is adjustable in the frame 33.
