Abstract
764,397. Stapling fibres; roller arrangements in textile spinning &c. machines. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER AKT.-GES. Jan. 3, 1955 [Jan. 2, 1954], No. 118/55. Classes 120 (2) and 120 (3). In cutting artificial filaments to staple lengths, tows in the wettest possible condition depend freely to a cutter device having knives which operate by pressing against a support which moves in the same direction and may run at the same peripheral speed thereas. Fig. 1 shows a feed apparatus comprising draw rolls 1, 2, 3 which feed a tow 4 and allow it to travel to a cutter consisting of a driven knife roller 5 and a freely rotatable counteracting roller 6 which is covered with a soft rubber sheath. The cutter of Fig. 2 comprises a rubber belt 9 travelling around rollers 7 and 8 and serving as an elastic support, the staple fibres being removed by a liquid stream 10. At least the last roller of the feed apparatus may be webbed to reduce adhesion between the tow and the roller(s), Fig. 3 (not shown). In the arrangement of Fig. 4 the tension of the tow from a spinning mechanism is taken up by rollers 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, travelling slightly faster than the feed roller 3. Fig. 5 shows the supply of a supplementary " liquid sheath through a funnel 16 having a flat tow passing therethrough. The roller 6 may be of a plastic material of medium hardness e.g. a polyamide, or of rubber.
