Class 59 A garbage shredder for attachment to a sink drain comprises an impeller 33 driven by a reversible motor 23 and provided with diametrically-opposed members 34 which co-operate with a fixed shredding ring 40 the lower wall of which has groups I to VI, Fig. 2, of saw-tooth like cutting and abrading elements 45, which each have a short radial wall 46 and a long sloping wall 47, the sloping walls 47 of the elements of each group facing in the opposite direction from those of an immediately adjacent group and from those of a diametrically-opposite group, passages 50, formed between the rim 36 of the impeller and the elements 45, communicating between a comminution chamber 11 and a drainage chamber 29 leading to an outlet 30. The groups of elements 45 are separated by diametrically opposed walls 51, 52, each wall 51 having sloping side walls and each wall 52 having radial side walls. The upper wall of the shredding ring 40 has shredding elements 43 which are provided with sharp-edged ridges 44. Specification 708,398 is referred to.
