[Class 59] Apparatus for the disposal of garbage &c. comprises a grinding chamber having mounted therein a rotatable impelling device for grinding the material and a frusto-conical admission passage having its larger end in communication with the chamber and disposed above and substantially coaxially with the rotatable device, the walls of the passage having a continuous helical step facing the chamber. As shown a casing 10 is connected to a sink, hopper, &c. 11 by a ring 12 connected to a flange 14 of the casing by a clamping ring 13 the ends of the screws 15 of which abut a ring 18 and seal the base of the hopper 11 by resilient packing 16, 17. The casing flares outwardly toward a rotary grinder 30 comprising a flywheel 36 and disc 35 provided with cutter elements 34 which may be biassed inwardly and movable outwardly under the influence of centrifugal force. The cutter elements 34 co-operate with an adjustable cutter element 40 mounted in a recess in the casing 10 and closed by a plate- 45. The cutter 40 is mounted in a holder 42 flanged at 46 and pressed into co-operation with a flange 47 by springs 44, the lower end of the holder being engaged by an adjustable bolt 50 whereby the lower end of the cutter 40 may be adjusted toward the cutter 34 to vary the width of the discharge gap 37. A similar cutter 41 may be mounted in the casing above the rotary element. The rotary grinder is provided with vane elements 33 which impel the material from the casing 10 toward the cutter elements, the movement being facilitated by helical ledges 66 which produce a screw-like action to the feed. A water jet 71 projects a stream along the ledges, reduces friction and also cleans the ledges. The material passing through the grinder falls into a channel 27 and is swept therefrom by vanes 38 fixed on the underside of the flywheel and is deposited through duct 23 to the connected sewer system.
