Abstract

719,509. Carbage shredders. NEW ZEALAND TEXTILE ENGINEERS, Ltd. July 31, 1953 [Sept. 9, 1952], No. 22631/52. Class 59 Apparatus for disintegrating solids present in garbage or the like waste to enable their disposal through the usual sewage drainage system comprises a body member 13, attachable to an outlet from a receptacle such as a kitchen sink, within the lower portion which is disposed a cutter chamber 18 having a rotary member 37, reversible in direction of rotation, with a shaped upper surface disposed therewithin, the cutter chamber having a plurality of cutters 19. Figs. 3 and 4, projecting inwardly therefrom with gaps 19a between adjacent cutters, at least some of the cutters lying partially above the upper surface of the member 37, the arrangement being such that on rotation of the member 37 the solids are disintegrated and the disintegrated particles pass downwardly through the gaps between the member 37 and the cutters for disposal. The cutter chamber is provided in its upper portion with inwardly projecting teeth 21, Figs. 3 and 4, curved ledges 22 being provided between the teeth 21 and cutters 19. The member 37 is driven by an electric motor 30, the switch of which is so operable as to reverse the direction of rotation of the motor between successive runnings of the member 37. The cutters 19 and teeth 21 are of raked serrated formation and are arranged in groups, a group or groups being raked in one direction and a further group or groups being raked in the opposite direction. The upper surface of the member 37 is divided into sectors 41 to 43, Fig. 6. the sectors 42, 43 being stepped downwardly from two diametrically opposite bars 40 to produce sections at different levels. The cutter chamber is removably supported by a plate 28 provided with a gutter 29 leading to an outlet 27. The member 37 is provided with fins 44 which move the garbage through the gutter 29. The plate 28 supports the motor 30 the shaft of which has mounted thereon a deflector plate 34 and a thrower disc 35. A stuffing box 33 is provided in a groove 32 of the plate 28. The sink or other receptacle outlet is provided with a plug 8 which is either removable as a whole or the inner portion of which is adapted to be opened or closed.
