This invention relates to a'hog for disintegrating or grinding wood, paper, bone, rubber,
cork, fabric or any other material to be disintegrated and has as its object to substantially improve and render more efficient devices of this character.
The several objects, advantages and novel details of construction of the invention will be made more apparent as this description proceeds, especially when considered in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional elevational view through a device constructed in accordance with my invention, and
Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken substantially on the plane indicated by line 2-2 in Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawing wherein like reference characters indicate like parts, it will be noted that the device comprises a base It! having an intermediate portion ll surmounted by a dome shaped portion 12. This latter portion may, for convenience of manufacture and assembly, comprise twosections l2 and I2" pgripherally united through flanged portions Extending vertically and centrally of the easing or housing sections is a shaft I4 of a power unit such as a motor I5 arranged in the base Ill. The central section H may be conveniently provided with bearing supports l6 for the shaft Arranged on the upper end of the shaft [4 is a cutter head ll, the same being substantially frusto conical in shape. This cutter head is secured to the upper end of the shaft by means of a nut l8 threaded onto the end of the shaft which holds a shouldered portion of the cutter head against a shoulder IS on the shaft.
The cutter head is provided with a plurality of cutter elements or knives 20 and owing to the frusto conical shape of the cutter head these knives, which are arranged contiguous thereto, are inclined upwardly and inwardly toward the shaft I4.
The knives 20 are set in slots in the cutter head and in the embodiment of the invention shown, these slots extend vertically. However, in some instances it may be desirable to arrange the knives at a vertical angle in which event the slots will be inclined vertically with respect to the axis of the cutter head so that the knives will have a shearing action.
The nut I8 is provided with a transversely extending recess or slot in which an agitator 2| is arranged, this agitator acting to radially distribute the material introduced through the inlet opening 22 of the dome shaped portion I2.
Surrounding the cutter head is a hopper-like member or retainer. 23 which extends from the inlet opening 22 to a point adjacent the base of the frusto conical shaped cutter head 11. This retainer wall 23 is provided with a plurality of slots through which a corresponding number of baflle plates 24 extend, these baffle plates being arranged to extend radially inwardly from the retainer wall 23 and be secured to the inner surface of the section l2 of the dome l2. As will be noted, the lower portion of the section l2 of the dome has the annular portion 25 of its wall inclined downwardly and inwardly toward the shaft I l. Ihese baffle plates are mounted for vertical adjustment by means of adjustment screws 26 and upon being vertically adjusted are moved toward or away from the cutter elements or knives 20.
The material after being ground or disintegrated is discharged through. an opening 2'! arranged adjacent the periphery of the base of the cutter head and from this opening isdischarged through a discharge port 28.
The material introduced into the inlet opening 22 is directed into engagement with the cutter elements 20 by means of the hopper or retaining wall 23 and any material which tends to collect adjacent the top of the cutter head is sufliciently agitated by the agitator 2| as to cause the same to be distributed in the path of the'cutters 20. These cutters together with the bafile plates 24 act to quickly and thoroughly disintegrate the wood chunks or pieces of other material which is introduced and the completely ground material is discharged through the discharge opening 2'! and thence through the outlet spout 28.
If desired, suction inducing means may be provided to insure the passage of light material through the device. To this end I propose mounting fan or agitator blades 30, for instance, I
on the head I! which blades act upon rotation of the cutter head to provide a suction. This will positively draw the light material downwardly to be acted upon by the cutters for subsequent discharge through the outlet. These fan blades may also be mounted on the shaft I4 if Reservation is made to make such changes in the non-essential details of construction as may come within the purview of the accompanying claims.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a device of the class described, a rotary cutter head, a plurality of cutter elementscarrled by said head, an annular hopper member surrounding said cutter head, said hopper member having circumferentially disposed vertically extending slots, baflle plates mounted exteriorly of said hopper member and extending through said slots to the interior of said hopper member, and means 'for adjustablymounting said baflle plates whereby they maybe adjustedtoward and from said cutter elements.
2. In a device of the class described, a rotary V cutter head, a plurality of cutter elements car-' baffle plates located within the annular member and extending through the aforesaid slots to the interior of the hopper, and means for adjustably mounting the bafile platesupon the annular member to vary the clearance between the inner edges of said plates and corresponding edges of the cutterelements.
