Class 59 Apparatus for disintegrating solids present in garbage or the like to enable their disposal through the usual sewage drainage system comprises a body member 13, attachable to an outlet from a receptacle such as a kitchen sink, disposed within the lower portion of which is a cutter chamber 18 having at or near the lower edge thereof an inwardly projecting lip 19b having gaps 43, Fig. 4, above which are located cutters 19 which co-operate with beaters 38 pivotally mounted on a rotary disc 37, the arrangement being such that on rotation of the disc 37, the solids are disintegrated between the co-acting beaters and cutters and the disintegrated particles pass through the gaps 43 for disposal. The chamber 18 is provided with further teeth 19a. The cutters are relieved on their rear surfaces. The chamber 18 is removably supported on a plate 28 provided with a gutter 29 leading to an outlet 27. The disc 37 is provided with fins 46 for moving the garbage through the gutter 29 and with stops 45 limiting the pivotal movement of the beaters. The plate 28 supports an electric motor 30 the shaft of which has mounted thereon a deflector plate 34 and a thrower disc 35. A stuffing box 33 is provided in a groove 32 of the plate 28. The outlet of the sink or like receptacle is provided with a plug 8 which is either removable as a whole or the inner member of which is adapted to be opened or closed.
