Abstract

1412173 Comminuting apparatus BLACK CLAWSON CO 26 Jan 1973 [26 Jan 1972] 4234/73 Heading B2A Apparatus for comminuting stringy and flexible waste comprises a chamber 10 Fig. 1 housing a rotor body 20 which has a blade 40 or blades each mounted on a vane 30 Fig. 5 projecting from the body and cooperating with a fixed cutter or cutters 42 Fig. 2 mounted in the chamber, each rotor blade 40 having means e.g. ribs or fins 35 coated at 37 with hard alloy, to prevent material which wraps itself-around the vane from sliding off. Thus the material is chopped up, rather than remaining in the chamber. The apparatus includes a screen plate 13 Fig. 1 in the bottom of the chamber and a junk catcher 17, 18. The rotor is adjustable axially, since the shaft 22 Fig. 3 is held in a retainer 44 which is threaded in the bottom end of a bearing housing 47. This permits the clearance between the cutters 40, 42 to be adjusted e.g. to .003 inch to .020 inches. Other embodiments include a vertical cutter vane 53 having ribs 56, Fig. 7, a rotor with a downwardly facing cutter 67, Fig. 9 and a shredder with multiple rotors 70 on a common shaft 71 Fig. 12.
