Abstract

1,067,051. Comminuting paper strip. P. S. CROWSLEY. March 16, 1966 [March 16, 1965], No. 11073/65. Heading B2A. Apparatus for comminuting waste paper strip 4 comprises a collecting pipe 6 adjoining the source of strip e.g. a paper roll 5 in a printing or paper converting machine, a comminuting device 9 and a collecting device 15 to collect the comminuted material from a circulating air current and deliver it to a waste container. As described, the comminuter comprises a casing 10 housing a fixed adjustable blade 11, which may be resiliently mounted and removable for sharpening, and a bladecarrying rotor 12. To one side of the collecting- device casing is secured a fan 21 and a motor which also drives a rotary member 16 having vanes 17. The vanes divide the casing into compartments, and are terminated at the end facing the fan by perforated wall parts 28. A delivery outlet 29 is provided supplied with air from the fan via a duct 23 to a point opposite the inlet 14 from the comminutor and leading to the waste container. The device may be vertical or horizontal. Alternative forms of comminutor may comprise segmental annular blades carried by a rotary carrier, each being arrayed successively oppositely obliquely to the plane of rotation each cooperating with a fixed blade; or discs divided into separate annular segments by circular slots and bent alternately in opposite directions to provide mountings for annular segmental cutter blades of such size that the end of one blade is spaced axially from the ends of the neighbouring blades and each blade overlaps its neighbour. The comminutor may be independantly driven.
