Abstract
790,536. Making electrical components; jointing by stamping. AMP, Inc. April 13, 1956 [April 14, 1955], No. 11335/56. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XXXVI] A method of making a crimped electrical connection comprises inserting the core 24 of the conductor 26 into the ferrule 20 and perimetrically straightening four areas of the ferrule wall at four places spaced approximately equally around the ferrule circumference until the resulting perimeter of the ferrule has a generally rhombic shape. The assembly is placed between V-shaped dies 60a and 70a which collapse the ferrule walls and deform the conductor to form a connection as shown in Figs. 1 and 11. A universal die set comprises a V-shaped die 60 (Fig. 14) and a co-operating die 70 having a double V-shaped die face. In order to crimp larger or smaller ferrules and conductors the upper die 70 is replaced with any one of a graduated set. A regular equilateral pentagonal crimp is formed by using dies 60a and 70a as shown in Fig. 15. The crimped areas may be formed at opposite ends of the ferrule (Fig. 6) leaving the centre of the ferrule uncrimped.
