Abstract

<FORM:0790004/III/1> A solar still, such as is used at sea, comprising a transparent, inflatable shell 1 containing an absorbent fabric bag 4 has a plurality of absorbent wicks 14 attached to the surface of the bag, leading from a position at its top underneath a trickle feed nozzle 7, and so arranged that they distribute the feed water over the whole area of the bag. Sea water trickles from the pocket 6 through the nozzle 7 and saturates the bag 4. Heat from the sun evaporates water from the soaked bag; the vapour condenses on the inside of the shell, the distilled water runs down into the reservoir 11 through holes 10, and may be drawn off by the tube 2 which is also used to inflate the shell. The wicks 14 are preferably provided as piping along the seams of the absorbent bag, and the ends at the top are made to stand up away from the surface of the bag under the nozzle 7, or are disposed in a slight concavity at the top of the bag under the nozzle 7. The top part of the bag is preferably shaped as a squat pyramid with an apex angle of 135-140 degrees.
