Abstract

<PICT:0788753/III/1> <PICT:0788753/III/2> In a solar still of the type having a transparent inflatable shell 1 which surrounds a fabric bag 4, there being a feed-pocket 6 at the top of the shell with a nozzle 7 for delivering sea water on to the bag, the nozzle is provided with a plastic mono-filament 14 which passes through the nozzle and is attached to the top of the fabric bag, the ratio of the respective diameters of the filament and the nozzle-passage 15 being 1 : 1.2. The mono-filament may be made of nylon, polyvinylidene chloride, or plastics based on terephthalic acid. This feed device ensures a correct rate of flow of sea water to the fabric bag 4 so that it is maintained in a thoroughly soaked condition without water cascading down the sloping top of the bag on to the shell. The sun's rays pass through the transparent shell, which may be made of polythene, and evaporate water from the soaked bag; the vapour condenses on the inside surface of the shell, and the condensate flows down into compartment 11 through perforations 10 in wall 8. In a still wherein the diameter of the shell is 24 inches, the nozzle-passage is 0.0045 inch diameter and the filament is 0.0038 inch diameter. Secured to the wall 8 there is a ballast compartment made in the form of an annular tube 12 which is filled with sea water from pocket 6 through tube 13, so as to stabilize the still when it is floating on the water. The bottom of the shell is provided with an opening 16 covered by a strainer-cloth 17, which performs the function of discharging excess brine without allowing the pressure in the still to decrease.
