Abstract
789,612. Welding glass. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. May 18, 1956 [May 20, 1955], No. 14589/55. Class 56. In the sealing of a glass tube into a glass wall portion, particularly a thin-walled tube, of, e.g., lead glass, into a thicker wall, of, e.g., soda glass, as in the manufacture of cathode ray tubes, the glass wall, a cone 1, secured to a rotatable plate 2 has within it a hollow shaft 4 supporting a metal cowl 8 and having a flange 5 on which rests a flared glass stub 6, 7. Burners 10 heat the rotating cone, Fig. 1, and the shaft 4 is raised, slowly pushing the softened glass upwards until the flare 7 almost contacts the cone. Heat is then applied, Fig. 3, to sever the cone 1 just above the flare 7 causing the cone to collapse on to the flare, the glass coated cowl being lifted clear by a rod 12. Continued heating fuses the cone and the flare and the softened glass is pressed against the flange 5 to shape it. To complete a cathode ray tube envelope, a tube of the same diameter and thickness may be sealed to the stub 6 and an end section is sealed to the open end of the cone. Specification 738,203 is referred to.
