789,596. Knitting-machines. SCHONFELD, P. Sept. 21, 1954, No. 27287/54. Class 74 (2). The drive for a ways knitting-machine and the mechanism for raising and lowering the guide bars are both controlled by a single operating rod 1 which is ground in such a way that the machine can only be operated after the guide bars have been lowered, and the guide bars can only be raised after the machine has been stopped. The drive for the machine is through an electric motor controlled from a switch actuated by a lever 20 connected to the rod 1. By moving the rod 1 longitudinally the switch is operated to stop or start the machine. The rod 1 is also rotatable and through an eccentric 2 and linkage 010 ... 18 rotation of the rod causes raising or lowering of the guide bars 24. To ensure that the guide bars are lowered before the machine is operated, a key 4 on the shaft 1 engages a keyway 3 in the eccentric 2 and only when the rod is sufficiently rotated to lower the guide bars does the key 4 further line up with a keyway 5 in a stationary bearing 6, thereby permitting the shaft to be moved longitudinally. Similarly, it is necessary to move the rod 1 so that the key 4 disengages keyways 5 and stop the machine before the rod 1 can be rotated to raise the guide bars. A stop 7 on the rod 1 engages a stationary stop 8 on another bearing 9 to ensure alignment of key 4 and keyway 5.
