Abstract

789,361. Hydraulic couplings. BORGWARNER CORPORATION. May 11, 1956 [May 20, 1955], No. 14692/56. Class 69 (2). A hydrodynamic converter-coupling has a housing formed, from two shells having flanges in telescoping relation, a sealing ring preventing leakage of liquid. The edges of the flanges are either spot-welded or one edge is bent over the other and has tongues entering notches formed in an edge of the other flange. These methods of securing the two parts of the housing avoid changes in dimensions of the housing which would occur if the flanges were joined by a continuous peripheral weld. In the embodiment of Fig. 1 shells 18, 23 are formed with flanges 27, 24 spot-welded at 31 and provided with an " O " ring seal. In the embodiment of Fig. 7, shells 44, 43 are formed with flanges 48, 45, the edge of flange 48 being bent over a rib 46 formed on flange 45 and having tongues 51 entering notches 49 formed in the rib. A seal 54 is provided. In other embodiments a sealing ring is held in position by an L-section ring. The method of securing the shells by spinning over the edge of one of the flanges is particularly suitable when the shells are respectively formed of aluminium and steel. U.S.A.
