Abstract

788,563. Variable-speed gearing. HARRISON REPRODUCTION EQUIPMENT, Ltd., and FIRTH, R. July 12, 1956 [July 12, 1955], No. 20204/55. Class 80 (2). Variable-speed friction gearing comprises toric-surfaced driving and members 4, 6, which may have coaxial, parallel or inclined axes, with an interposed straight row of contacting balls 10, 11, 12 in a stationary cage 9 which is tiltable about an axis 14 at the meeting point of, and tangential to, the two loci of the centres of the toric arcs 4A, 6A of the members 4, 6, means being provided to produce the required contact pressure. As shown, the members 4, 6 are coaxial and a number of cages 9 may therefore be used, each pivoted by trunnions 13 in a pair of lugs 8 extending from a sleeve 7 secured in the casing coaxially with the member 4. The cages are tilted through links 23 by a sleeve 21 slidable on the sleeve 7 under the control of a knob 15 through gearing 16, 17, shaft 18 and stirrup 19. A spring 32 provides the necessary contact pressure; alternatively, this pressure may be provided by magnetic means, the members 4, 6 being permanently magnetized with opposite polarities or being arranged in an external magnetic field, the magnitude of which could be adjustable. The toric arcs 4A, 6A may be of the same or of different radii, and the balls 10 11, 12 of each row may be of different diameters. Where the members 4, 6 are not coaxial, only a single cage 9 can be used.
