Class' 89(3) [Also in Group XXII] In attaching a member to the wall of a flexible sleeve or pocket by prongs or eyelets, as in securing prong attached fastening devices, to trouser waistbands, a mandrel provided with an anvil and/or member carrying means is arranged in or is movable to a position wherein it can be inserted into the sleeve or pocket, and during the attaching operation the mandrel is rigidly supported by a supporting part beneath it. In the fastener inserting machine according to Fig. 1, an anvil 7, recessed to carry and locate the back plate 8 of a two part fastening device, is mounted at the end of a mandrel 10 which is pivoted on a vertical axis through a bolt 23. In the position shown in Fig. 1 the mandrel lies above a base 1 which acts as a support for the mandrel during the inserting operation and the anvil is located beneath the slide 2 and holder 3 for the hook member 4 of the two part fastening device and from this position the mandrel can be pivoted through a right angle to facilitate its insertion into a sleeve or pocket 11, Fig. 4, forming a trouser waistband. In a modification the mandrel is arranged for limited swinging movement about a horizontal axis, (Figs. 8 and 9 not shown) in order to facilitate its insertion into the sleeve or pocket, or it may be flexible (Fig. 10 not shown) or may be manually detachable (Fig. 7 not shown) for the same purpose. The mandrel may be normally spaced from the bed plate of the machine sufficiently to allow the thickness of waistband material to pass therebetween. In further modifications. Fig. 11 (not shown) and Fig. 12, a part of the machine bed-plate is movable with respect to a rigid mandrel to provide the necessary clearance for inserting the mandrel into the sleeve or pocket. In Fig. 12 the bed-plate part 40 moves vertically under the influence of a cam surface 41 on a member which may be manually or automatically actuated. The invention is also applicable to an arrangement wherein the fastener back plate 49 (Fig. 15 not shown) is provided with prongs and the hook carrying part of the fastener has apertures to receive the prongs. The mandrel may be magnetized to retain the fastener part during the inserting operation.
