A process of producing packaged cultures of organisms such as mushroom spawn comprises partially filling a flexible plastic container with a culture medium such as compost, closing the container while forming an aerator provided with a filter, sterilizing the contents of the container, inoculating the culture medium by introducing the organism through the aerator or container wall and allowing the inoculated culture medium to incubate. As shown in Fig. 1, the mouth of a plastic bag 12 is closed, e.g., by a tie 20, about an aluminium tube 18 after it has been partially filled with compost 10, and the tube is closed by a plug of cotton wool 22 after introduction of the spawn. In a modification, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown) the edges of the bag are flattened and clamped against a strip of filter material and in a further modification, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), the mouth of the bag is tucked into a depression formed.in the compost.
