A method of packaging articles 3 in a container 1 comprises covering the floor of the container with a solid plate 2 of foamed material, depositing the articles on the plate, and then filling the remaining space 4 with foamed synthetic or natural material in liquid form which solidifies around the contents. To unpack the articles the bottom of the container is opened, plate 2 removed, and the articles withdrawn.
