Abstract

788,253. Pistons. DIESEL ENGINE CO. OF TEXAS. Oct. 11, 1955, No. 28871/55. Class 122 (1). A piston for pumps, blowers, &c., comprises an expansible hollow cylinder consisting of a plurality of flat rings 1, Figs. 2 and 3, made from a single piece of material and lying tightly upon each other with the interconnecting portions of adjacent rings shaped to a stepped formation 3, and a sealing member 6 of truncated-conical shape urged into the complementary-shaped interior of the cylinder. Sealing is effective in one direction only in the device shown in Fig. 3 by reason of the higher fluid pressure at the lower end of the piston and, if desired, a stop plate 8 may be screw-threaded into the upper side of the cone 6 to prevent the latter from dropping out should the sealing pressure be reduced. A seal effective in both directions is provided by means of two sealing cones 11, 12, Fig. 4, engaging in tapered seats in opposite ends of the piston. In the device shown in Fig. 5, the piston consists as before of a sealing cone 14 and integrally-formed rings 15, the parts being held together in sealing engagement with the cylinder 13 by a compression spring 29 inserted between a bridge 18 and a flange at the upper end of a shaft 16 extending from the cone; alternatively, the spring is inserted between the upper ring and a plate secured to the upper end of the shaft 16.
