Abstract
The invention comprises 1-(b -chloroethylaminomethyl) - 2 - naphthol and acid addition salts thereof. The naphthol may be prepared by reacting b -naphthol with formaldehyde and ethanolamine, e.g. in a solution using aqueous methanol as the solvent and heating under reflux, to form 2-(b -hydroxyethyl)-2,3-dihydro-1H - naphth[1 : 2, e] - m - oxazine, followed by acid hydrolysis of this compound to form 1-(b -hydroxyethylaminomethyl) - 2 - naphthol which is then chlorinated with a chlorinating agent such as thionyl chloride. In the example, 1-(b -hydroxyethylaminomethyl) - 2 - naphthol is prepared by the above process using hydrochloric acid which forms the hydrochloride salt thereof, and the hydrochloride salt is treated with thionyl chloride to form the hydrochloride of 1-(b - chloroethylaminomethyl) - 2 - naphthol.
