Abstract

787,967. Cupping. U.S. INDUSTRIES, Inc. March 8, 1956 [March 9, 1955], No. 7290/56. Class 83 (4). A metal drawing press includes a draw slide reciprocable within a blank-holder slide means to adjust the positions of said slides with respect to each other, and control means to stop operation thereof when the lower ends of said slides reach a predetermined minimum distance apart. The blank holder slide 1 is supported on vertical rods 3, 4, 5 and 6 each carrying bevel gears 7, 8, 9 and 10. Adjusting mechanism for the slide includes a motor 12 which through reduction gearing 13 rotates the bevel gears 7, 8, 9 and 10 by means of bevel gears on shafts 14, 17, 22 and 25. The draw slide 2 is likewise mounted on rods 30, 31, 32 and 33 provided with bevel gears 34, 35, 36 and 37 and drive means comprising a motor 38 driving shafts 40 and 39 and reduction gearing 41 and 42. The control means associated with and operated by the blank holder slide comprises a screwed rotatable rod 47 mounted on top of the slide and rotated by a gear 50 on the shaft 22. The rod 47 carries a screw-threaded sleeve 52 made integral with a vertical bar 53 the lower end of which is attached to a sleeve 56 slidable on a guide rod 54. When the blank holder moves upwardly the bar 53 will move toward the left. Similar control means on the draw slide comprises a screwed rod 57 mounted on top cf the draw slide parallel to the screwed rod 47 on the blank holder slide. The screwed rod 57 is rotated from the shaft 39 by means of bevel gearing and a transverse shaft 61. A screw threaded sleeve 64 carrying a switch 65 is mounted on the rod 57. The sleeve is prevented from rotating with the rod by an extension arm 68 engaging a guide bar 69. The sleeve moves towards the bar 53 when the draw slide moves downwardly and vice versa. The relative positions of the switch and the bar are adjusted so that the switch will contact the bar and switch off the motors 12 and 38 when the lower ends of the two slides are the required distance apart.
