Abstract

[Also in Division G3] An apparatus for guiding a metal strip of varying width, during movement in its longitudinal direction comprises at least one pair of guiding elements, each of which is mounted in a slide carriage movable against spring pressure transversely to the edge of the strip and which are adjustable relative to each other by at least one motor and is characterized in that the stroke of each guide element is considerably less than the changes in width of the strip, that each guide element acts upon a limit switch mounted within each carriage and having a switching stroke smaller than the stroke of the guide element and in that the two limit switches in the pair of carriages together control the motor so that when the strip changes in width, the two limit switches actuate the motor to move both carriages in accordance with the change in width of the strip until one of the limit switches stops the motor. The guide elements consist of rollers 1 each mounted in a slide 7 guided in a socket in the carriage 2 and pressed outwardly by a weak coil spring 3 and a stronger cup spring 4. The slide 7 can move between limits determined by the cup spring 4 when flattened and the front end of the bush 11, which is screwed into the carriage and can be moved axially by rotation of a shaft 9 having a pinion 10 which engages with gear teeth on the periphery of the bush. The slide 7 has an extension carrying a pin 12 which acts on a limit switch 5, the operating position of which can be adjusted by a set-screw 14. The switch controls a motor connected by a reduction gear to a screw 15 which has right- and left-hand threads. Each carriage is connected to the screw by nut 17. Alternatively, there may be a motor and screw unit associated with each carriage and the motors may run synchronously or independently.
