894,808. Roll-grinding. FARREL-BIRMING- HAM CO. Inc. July 15, 1960 [Aug. 11, 1959], No. 24713/60. Addition to 819,880. Class 60. The roll-grinding machine of the parent Specification has the means for adjusting the wheel head about its pivotal attachment of the sub-base constituted by a support element which is slidably mounted in the wheel-head at a point remote from the wheel-head pivot, supported at one end on the machine sub-base, and arranged to be adjusted relative to the wheel-head, whereby the wheel-head is pivoted relative to the work. The sub-base 18, movable on slides 17 towards or away from the work 13, carries the pivot 22 of the wheel-head 21 at its forward end and a crowning- cam 40 at its opposite end, a follower 39 being carried at the lower end of a sliding member 38 vertically adjustable in the remote end of the wheel-head to provide for fine adjustment of the wheel. A hand wheel 35 enables preliminary adjustment to be made by rotation of a horizontal screwed-shaft 24 in a nut 26 supported by a rest 15. Fine adjustment is effected by a wheel 48, which rotates, through a reduction gear 45, 44, a screwed shaft to move the sliding member 38 which is itself held against rotation by a guide member 51 slidable within a slot 52, Fig. 2; the end of the wheel-head remote from the grinding wheel is held against lateral movement by rollers 76 carried by bell-cranks 74 having adjusting screws 77. The crowning motion of the grinding wheel is effected by rocking the wheel-head about its pivot 22 by rotating the radially-adjustable crowning cam 40 mounted at the end of a shaft 53 carried in the sub-base 18, the shaft being driven as a carriage 12 is reciprocated, by a pinion 65 engaging a rack 66 on the machin2 base 10, a vertical shaft 61, and worm gears 60, 6e in sliding-driving engagement with the shaft 53. The grinding wheel shaft 20 may be driven through multiple belts 72 by a motor 70. A second grinding wheel, similarly operated and supported, may be provided on the opposite side of the roll 13.
