A device, for forming a curved surface on a workpiece, comprises a tool or work-holder 7, slidably located in a block 4 carried on a frame 5, a lead screw 2 for sliding the frame through bearings 6 in a base 1, and means including an adjustable angle bar 8, for moving holder 7 through block 4. Screw 2 may be rotated by power means, or manually by a wheel 3. Holder 7 is slidable along a guide 17 which is slidable on the bed 1. Bar 8 is pivoted to frame 5 at 13, is adjustably fixed by a clamp 9, and is slidable through a bearing 11 which swivels on a rack 12. The latter meshes with a gear-wheel 14, to which a link 16 is adjustably fixed in a slot 19, by a clamp 18. In operation, bar 8, Fig. 1, is set by a scale 10 at the required angle, screw 2 is rotated so as to slide the tool or work-holder 7 along slide 17, bar 8 moves through bearing 11 so as to move rack 12 axially and rotate gear-wheel 14. This rotation causes link 16, slide 17, and holder 7 to move vertically, so that the tool or work, moves in a curved path. In a modification, bar 8, Fig. 2, is adjustably fixed on bed 1, and a table 20 carrying rack 12 is moved. A second work or tool holder 22 may be employed whose vertical movement is different to that of holder 26, and is produced by a second rack 21a movable with holder 26, which meshes with a pinion 21b coaxial with a gearwheel 21, which meshes with a rack on holder 22.
