Apparatus for drilling rolled section components comprises a horizontal support, means for horizontally clamping a component on the support, at least one horizontal drill which is vertically adjustable, and a feeler carried by a rigid framework and vertically movable relative to the framework so that it can register the vertical position of a face on the component with respect to the support. The apparatus comprises two drill heads 2, 4, each of which has six drills 6, a roller conveyer 10 for an I-section beam 8, clamps 12, 14 for the beam, and a rigid framework including a cross-bar 18 supported on pillars, and two carriages 20, 21 having arms 22 which carry feelers 16. Each feeler 16 is connected to an indicator 24, which includes a dial 32 and a pointer 30. Vertical movement of feeler 16 rotates a needle carrying pinion 28, and the dial can be adjusted by a worm 33 and teeth 35. The feeler is moved towards the work by an electric motor 34, worm reduction unit 36, a slipping clutch and a pinion 38. In operation, beam 8 is moved into position by driving the conveyer rollers, it is clamped and at the same time motors 34 are energized to move the feelers into engagement with the web of the beam, and dials 32 are read. The drill beads are vertically adjusted and the feelers are retracted.
