Abstract

1355038 Machine-tool details; copy-milling VICKERS Ltd 5 July 1971 [6 May 1970] 21923/70 Headings B3B and B3K In workpiece-machining apparatus, a machine tool has a slideway 1 on which each one 8 of a plurality of workpiece carriages can be mounted for movement therealong, the slideway including air-bearing means 6 which support a predetermined amount of the weight of a carriage during its movement along the slideway. As shown, the machine tool slideway has dovetail formations 2, 3 a locking pin 5 for engagement with the carriage 8 to locate the carriage in a fixed position, and clamps 4 for securing the carriage to the slideway. Hence, any one of the plurality of carriages 8 can be mounted on the slideway. Each clamp 4 comprises a pneumatically operable plunger 4B and an integral wedge part 4A. Preferably, and as shown, a pivoted template table 7 which can be locked in an operative position is provided and can mount a template which can be followed during copy milling of the one or more workpieces on the carriage when the latter is located in position on the slideway. A given carriage can be passed successively to different machine tools whose slideways are aligned. A conveyer system can return the carriages from the final tool to the initial position upstream of the first tool.
