Abstract

A thermoplastic composition of use in sealing expansion joints in paving constructions is prepared by heating at a temperature from 400 DEG F. to 650 DEG F. a mixture of a major proportion by weight of asphalt, e.g., of M.P. 100 DEG F. to 200 DEG F., preferably 100 DEG F. to 130 DEG F., and a minor proportion by weight of vulcanized butyl rubber scrap, with or without a hydrocarbon oil, e.g., lubricating, transformer, coal tar or light mineral oil in the proportion of up to 10 per cent by weight of the total mix, for a time to dissolve the butyl rubber, generally 2-4 hours.
