Abstract

787,477. Welding chains. TAYLOR, H. G. March 16, 1956 [March 30, 1955], No. 9217/55. Class 83 (4). In a machine for welding the links of a chain, there are provided means for turning at least part of the chain through 90 degrees after each welding step so that the next link to be welded will be correctly presented to the electrodes, means for exerting a continuous pull on the chain and means permitting the feed of the chain to commence after the initial part of each quarter turn and to arrest the feed of each turn, so giving a link by link feed and allowing the welding of the links to be carried out in a single pass of the chain through the machine. The upper U-shaped part of.a link 11a is held in a two part electrode 10 whilst a lower U-shaped. part is held in a lower twopart electrode (not shown) and welded to the upper part. A link 11d above the link 11a is held in one branch of a cruciform slot 19 in an externally-toothed member 18. against the edge 17x of a slot 17 in a fixed member 16 by. a pull exerted on the chain passing over a drum 13 driven by a slipping motor 15, the link 11d being unable to pass through the slot 17 since it is not aligned with it. After welding the link 11a the electrode parts are separated by their actuating cylinders 12 and a rack 21 engaging the toothed member 18 is moved by its fluid pressure cylinder 23, controlled by the operator, to turn the link 11d anticlockwise through 90 degrees. As the link 11d turns and rides off the edges 17x the pull on the chain raises the link 11d slowly through the slot 17 until the link 11c, now turned through 90 degrees, occupies the other branch of the slot 19 and abuts the edges 17x. The link 11a occupies the position previously occupied by link 11b and an upper U-shaped link part is threaded therethrough to be welded in the electrodes 10. After the next welding step the member 18 is rotated clockwise through 90 degrees.
